Plea Deals in works for South Florida Bonanno Crew
Federal prosecutors say guilty pleas are in the works for most of the 11 people charged with running a South Florida racket for New York's Bonanno organized crime family.
Prosecutors said at a hearing Thursday in Fort Lauderdale that eight of those charged are in talks to change their pleas from innocent to guilty. They did not identify which defendants, but defense attorneys said the list so far does not include purported ringleader Thomas Fiore.
The 11 are charged with a variety of crimes, including murder conspiracy, racketeering, Medicare fraud, identity theft and selling stolen goods. The FBI recorded more than 150 conversations between the alleged Mafia crew members.
Trial was set for Oct. 5, but will be delayed until later this year.
