Joe Pesci & Al Pacino May Be Joining Scorsese's 'The Irishman'

We may be on the verge of an amazing collection of the finest actors to ever grace mafia movies with their presence. For a couple of years we've been hearing about another collaboration between Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese with The Irishman, a film about Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, a reputed criminal who has carried out more than 25 mob murders. Scorsese is currently working on The Invention of Hugo Cabret, but there's been talk that this could be his next project after that. Now even better news comes from Deadline who reports Al Pacino and three-time Scorsese collaborator Joe Pesci are circling the project.
De Niro has talked about the potential for two films coming out of the source material book I Heard You Paint Houses, but it's unclear if that idea (which came from Forrest Gump writer Eric Roth) will actually happen. Described as Goodfellas meets Casino meets Heat the project certainly would certainly raise a lot of interesting eyebrows if this cast comes together.
Pesci and De Niro both previously worked with Scorsese on Raging Bull, Casino and Goodfellas, so their collaborative muscles have been well exercised. Meanwhile, Pacino has surprisingly never appeared in a Scorsese film (though the director has said that he would be a fine choice to play an older version of Frank Sinatra in his gestating biopic on the iconic singer). This is amazing news for mafia movie fans everywhere, so I hope this casting actually comes to fruition.
