Bulger lawyers get more time to look at evidence

Lawyers for former reputed crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger have been given more time to review a massive amount of evidence turned over by prosecutors.
Bulger's lawyers said Wednesday the government has given them a huge pile of documents and other materials that may be used during Bulger's trial. The former leader of the Winter Hill Gang is charged in connection with 19 murders. He was not in court for the brief status conference.
Attorney J.W. Carney Jr. said the defense has begun to go through thousands of pages of discovery materials, but needs more time before he can report back to the court. Carney, who is about 6 feet tall, said the documents, if piled on top of each other, stand taller than him.
Several family members of Bulger's alleged victims were in court Wednesday.
Patricia Donahue, the widow of Michael Donahue, who was fatally shot in 1982, said she and her adult son, Tom, plan to come to every hearing.
"We started this knowing this would be a long haul and we're going to stick with it," she said.
"We want to be here for my father," Tom Donahue said.
Michael Donahue, a truck driver, was killed during a hit on a man who was cooperating with investigators against Bulger. Donahue gave the man a ride home. Bulger and another man riddled the car with bullets.
Prosecutors say Bulger, now 82, committed many of his crimes while working as an FBI informant.
Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler scheduled another status conference in Bulger's case for Nov. 21. No trial date has been set yet.
Bulger fled Boston just before a racketeering indictment was handed up against him in January 1995. He remained a fugitive for more than 16 years until he was apprehended in June in Santa Monica, Calif., where he had been living with his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig. She is charged with conspiracy to harbor and conceal a fugitive.
