Manocchio pleads guilty, Lato rejects plea deal
The former reputed boss of the New England organized crime family pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal racketeering conspiracy, while a co-defendant balked at the plea deal that he signed.
As part of his plea agreement, Luigi (Louis) “Baby Shacks” Manocchio, the former reputed boss of the Patriarca crime family, admitted to racketeering conspiracy in his involvement in organized criminal activity. Edward "Eddie" Lato, a crime family "capo", was also expected to plead guilty. However, he backed out of the plea agreement that he signed, after disagreeing with a federal prosecutor's account of what the government would prove if his case had gone to trial.
The charges relate to the men collecting "protection" payments from several Providence area strip clubs, including the Satin Doll and Cadillac Lounge.
On Thursday, reputed mob associates Raymond "Scarface" Jenkins, Alfred "Chippy" Scivola, and Richard Bonifiglia are also expected to plead guilty to racketeering and conspiracy in the operation.
All the men could face up to twenty years in jail. However, their plea agreements call for Manocchio, now 84, to face from 63 to 78 months in prison. The plea agreement which Lato signed calls for from 92 to 115 months in federal prison.
While Judge William Smith set sentencing for Manocchio for May 11, his attorney asked that the date be moved up, saying his client found the Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls "ugly".
