Quebec to probe dead cop's Mafia links

Quebec has ordered an investigation following media reports a Montreal police detective tried to peddle secrets to the Mafia.
Sgt.-Det. Ian Davidson committed suicide last month, a day after he made headlines as a mole who offered stolen data to gangsters for $1 million.
Public Security Minister Robert Dutil said Wednesday that provincial police will lead a probe into several leaks about the ongoing investigation.
Montreal police chief Marc Parent decried the fact his investigators are leaking details of the Davidson probe to the media.
"I've been shocked to read confidential information day after day," said Parent. "We won't accept that. When you're a police officer, you have a duty to discretion."
Davidson is believed to have stolen the names of more than 2,000 police informants and other undercover operatives shortly before his retirement in Jan. 2011.
The 58-year-old worked in the police intelligence unit and had been one of only three people on the entire force with access to the files.
Three months later, sources say, the 33-year veteran offered the files to Tony Mucci, an influential Calabrian mobster from Montreal.
Mucci rejected Davidson's overtures and instead informed police, through a lawyer, that the force had a mole in its midst.
Parent said last month that all of the stolen files had been recovered but sources later told QMI Agency that Davidson might have tried to peddle the data in Costa Rica.
Davidson had reportedly vacationed in the Caribbean country for years and was shopping for a luxury beachfront home.
A SWAT team arrested Davidson at Trudeau Airport last fall as he attempted to return to the Central American country.
He was interrogated and released, but he killed himself in a motel room on January 18 after he learned media outlets were about to release his name.
Investigators seized a laptop, an iPod, and one or more memory sticks from the rented room in the Montreal suburb of Laval.
