Vinny Gorgeous jury asks for another listen to secret jailhouse tapes
A Brooklyn jury, mulling the evidence for a second day in the murder trial of former Bonanno crime boss Vincent (Vinny Gorgeous) Basciano, asked for another listen to secretly recorded jailhouse tapes.
The panel is chewing over a captured conversation in which Basciano says to Mafia chieftain Joseph Massino, "Let him go," referring to the victim.
Federal prosecutors contend Basciano was talking about his order to whack mob associate Randolph Pizzolo.
But defense lawyer George Goltzer has countered "Let him go" merely meant that Basciano wanted Pizzolo chased away for his misbehavior.
If Basciano is convicted of racketeering murder, the jury will return to determine if the penalty should be death by lethal injection or life in prison without parole.
