Whitey Bulger penned two memoirs while on the run from the FBI

UNDATED: In this handout from the Federal Bure...Notorious alleged gangster James “Whitey” Bulger may have penned two memoirs, one of which was titled “My Life in the Irish Mafia Wars.” Now they may be used against him in court.
Also, investigators have found a photo bolstering Bulger’s claim that he visited Las Vegas during his 16 years on the run.
Investigators seized what appear to be two separate autobiographies written by the 82-year-old Bulger while conducting searches at his former homes in Santa Monica, Calif., and South Boston, according to a status report filed today in federal court.
A document titled “My Life in the Irish Mafia Wars” was seized Jan. 5, 1995 -- the day after a warrant was issued for Bulger’s arrest in Boston on federal extortion charge -- during a search of the South Boston home he shared with his former girlfriend, Teresa Stanley, according to the report.
“It is unclear at this juncture whether (Bulger) authored this document,” prosecutors wrote. However, they said, they may use the document as evidence against Bulger when he goes to trial in November on charges of racketeering and 19 murders.
A second document “which appears to be autobiographical” was recovered when FBI agents captured Bulger and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, 60, on June 22 and searched the apartment they shared at 1012 Third St. in Santa Monica, Calif.
Federal prosecutors revealed the existence of the two documents for the first time in their report detailing all of the evidence which may be used against Bulger and has been shared with his lawyers as required by law.
Bulger’s attorney, J.W. Carney Jr., declined to comment on the court filing.
Bulger, a long-time FBI informant who provided information against his rivals in the Mafia, fled just before his 1995 indictment and became one of the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted fugitives while eluding authorities for more than 16 years. He is accused in 19 murders.
After his arrest, Bulger boasted that while the FBI was conducting a worldwide manhunt for him he had slipped back to Boston a couple of times and even made a trip to Las Vegas where he won more than he lost.
Investigators have recovered a photo of Bulger in Las Vegas, according to the report filed in court. However, the report does not indicate when the photo was taken.
Teresa Stanley said today that she didn’t know anything about the memoir seized from the home she shared with Bulger for several decades before he went on the run and she wasn’t home during the 1995 FBI search.
“I never even saw him write in a journal or anything,” Stanley said. “It does surprise me. It’s not going to be a jolly book. … He was just so private with everything, so to write a book doesn’t seem like him.”
Stanley said the FBI seized boxes of books, mail, and papers from the first-floor exercise room in her house that Bulger had set up as a weight room and used to store all of his personal belongings.
An author sent Bulger a typewritten proposal decades ago asking to write a book or magazine piece about the gangster, according to Stanley, but she said Bulger didn’t seem interested and she didn’t think anything ever came of it.
“It was one author,” Stanley said. “He wanted to know what [Bulger] thought and was he interested in talking to him. Nothing ever came of it.” When asked if the proposal could have been, “My Life in the Irish Mafia Wars,” Stanley said, “I don’t think it was that.”
